Construction of the facades remained curiously faithful to the traditions of the 11th century throughout the Late Middle Ages and resisted every influence of Venetian Gothic in the Quattrocento. The plan used consisted of rows of arches and windows facing the parade on the canal. A triple-arched entrance allowed access to the palace courtyard from a private landing on the canal. The three-part division was carried through to the second and third stories, although huge windows were added.
